Workshop Description

Family estrangements or cutoffs are extremely widespread, affecting literally millions of people of all ages. The pain and damage from a cutoff can have a ripple effect that is passed down for generations.

Why are cutoffs so common, what are the causes, what can families do to prevent or repair rifts in the family and how can therapists intervene to help the family find a path forward? In this presentation we will discuss partial and total cutoffs, some of the reasons families so frequently become estranged and how we as therapists can help families find a way back to a relationship.

Educational Goals

This training is designed to deepen understanding of the prevalence and lasting impact of family estrangements including partial cutoffs. It will help clinicians explore the intergenerational and multi-cultural aspects of their clients' decisions to break or intensely limit contact with adult family members. The ultimate goal is to help clients explore ways to move forward with clarity and healing.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the difference between partial and total family cutoff

  • Identify 3 causes of family estrangement

  • Describe 3 clinical interventions for clients experiencing estrangement

  • Examine family messages around race, class, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation connected to estrangement
