Workshop Description

Effective case conceptualization is at the heart of strong clinical work, yet many therapists struggle with weaving together complex client histories, affect regulation patterns, cultural influences, and self-beliefs into a clear treatment framework.

This 2-hour training introduces participants to the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model as a practical lens for deepening clinical clarity from the very first session. Through focused teaching and case-based discussion, clinicians will learn how to integrate AIP theory into the intake process to identify key self-beliefs, cultural influences, and affect management strategies that shape client functioning. Special attention will be given to understanding how cultural differences, marginalized identities, and systemic oppression can disrupt adaptive information processing and contribute to client symptoms.

Participants will explore how these elements interact within the AIP framework and discover ways to use intake information more effectively to guide treatment planning. By the end of the presentation, participants will come away with a concrete, AIP-informed strategy to enhance intake, sharpen case conceptualization, and strengthen the clinical decision-making process.

Educational Goals

Participants will learn to recognize affect regulation patterns, self-beliefs, and developmental influences, while also considering how cultural differences, marginalized identities, and systemic oppression shape client functioning. The training highlights how AIP-informed strategies help clinicians use intake information to clarify treatment planning and guide clients toward therapeutic resolution. Attendees will leave with a practical approach they can apply immediately to enhance intake, sharpen case conceptualization, and support lasting healing and improved functioning.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the core principles of Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) theory and their relevance for case conceptualization.

  • Apply AIP-informed strategies to the intake process to strengthen clinical clarity and treatment planning.

  • Describe at least 3 strategies for adapting existing evidence-based practices to meet the unique needs of neurodivergent clients.
